Progress through the Early Stages of Assimilation in Play Therapy with a Traumatized Six-Year-Old Girl

We applied the assimilation of problematic experiences sequence (APES) to a six-year-old girl’s processing traumatic involving violence and death in play therapy. analyzed post-session notes from first 34 sessions much longer treatment, during which girl repeatedly enacted drama we called cottage play, characters assumed by child assigned therapist. distinguished four phases based on changes themes. In phase 1, expressed her need for safety response an overwhelming internal threat (APES stage 0, warded off/dissociated). 2, she worked escape avoid threat, referenced as monsters bad memories unwanted thoughts/avoidance). Phase 3 was brief period consolidation. 4, actively faced trauma, murderers, soldiers, awareness/emergence). Our observations underlined child–therapist collaboration dyadic processing. The expressions suggested increasing but limited (stages 0 2 out eight stages). model usefully described symbolic therapy, results pointed tentative elaborations APES descriptions.
